Choosing the right CIPD level matters. Start too low and you may be under-challenged; start too high and the academic demands can feel overwhelming. Here is how to pick the level that fits you.
Match the level to your stage
- New to HR, or in an admin or assistant role: Level 3 Foundation builds the basics.
- A practising HR officer, advisor or people manager: Level 5 Associate Diploma is the natural fit.
- A senior, strategic or aspiring Chartered professional: Level 7 Advanced Diploma adds depth.
Consider your academic background
Level reflects academic demand as well as HR seniority. Level 5 is undergraduate level and Level 7 is postgraduate level. If you have not studied for a while, be honest about the step up, especially the analysis and referencing expected at higher levels.
Do you need to start at Level 3?
Not necessarily. Many experienced professionals start at Level 5 without Level 3. Study centres can advise on entry requirements, but as a rule, choose the level that matches both your role and your comfort with academic writing.
Rule of thumb: pick the level that matches your current HR responsibilities and your confidence with analytical, referenced writing.
