How Many References Should a CIPD Assignment Have?

How many references a CIPD assignment needs at Level 3, 5 and 7, what counts as a credible source, and why quality matters more than quantity.

One of the most common questions CIPD learners ask is how many references their assignment should have. The honest answer is that there is rarely a fixed number. What matters is that every key claim is supported by a credible source, and that your referencing is consistent and correct.

There is usually no set number

Most CIPD briefs do not state a required number of references. Assessors look for whether your arguments are properly supported, not whether you hit a target. That said, there are sensible ranges that reflect the depth each level expects.

A sensible guide by level

  • Level 3: a handful of credible sources per unit is usually enough, as the focus is on clear explanation.
  • Level 5: expect to cite more widely, as evidence-based analysis is central. A well-supported answer often draws on a range of sources across the tasks.
  • Level 7: wider reading is essential. Postgraduate work is expected to engage with a broad base of academic and professional literature.

Quality beats quantity. Ten well-chosen, well-integrated sources are worth far more than thirty listed but barely used.

What counts as a credible source?

  • CIPD factsheets, reports and research
  • Academic textbooks and peer-reviewed journals
  • Reputable professional bodies and official statistics

Avoid leaning on unreferenced websites, blogs or AI tools as your main evidence. Every in-text citation must also appear in your reference list, formatted consistently in Harvard style.

If you are unsure whether your referencing is strong enough, our Harvard referencing support reviews your citations and reference list and shows you exactly what to improve.
