What 7CO04 is about

7CO04 is the research project of the Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic People Management. Where other units assess how well you understand strategy, culture or practice, this one assesses whether you can generate evidence yourself: formulate a research question and aims, design a study, collect and analyse data, and turn what you find into conclusions, evidence-based recommendations and honest reflection. It is the fullest expression of the evidence-based practice the CIPD Profession Map expects of senior people professionals, and it is the unit where research methods, ethics and critical evaluation of evidence all have to be handled rigorously at the same time.

That makes it a different kind of challenge. In most units you answer questions someone else has set; here you define, justify and answer your own. The freedom is real and so is the responsibility, which is exactly why the unit demonstrates masters-level capability when it is done well.

The shape of a business research project

Whatever your topic, a sound project moves through the same stages: research question and aims, literature review, research design and methods, ethics and permission, data collection, analysis, conclusions, recommendations and reflection. The question defines what the project is trying to find out and sets the boundaries of everything else. The literature review establishes what is already known and where your study sits. Design and methods decide how you will generate evidence: a quantitative, qualitative or mixed-methods approach, delivered through instruments such as surveys, interviews, focus groups or secondary data. Ethics and organisational permission are settled before any data exists. Data collection produces the raw material, analysis turns it into findings, conclusions answer the question, recommendations translate the answer into defensible action, and reflection examines what the project taught you about research and about your own practice.

Notice where data collection sits: in the middle, not near the start. Learners under time pressure are tempted to send a survey out early and work out the rest later. Data gathered before the question is fixed rarely answers it, and data gathered before ethics and permission are settled may not be usable at all.

What masters-level rigour means at each stage

At the question stage, rigour means specificity and feasibility: a question narrow enough to answer properly with the access and time you actually have, and open enough that the answer is not decided in advance. At the literature stage, rigour means using published research to sharpen your study rather than decorate it. A strong review identifies what is known, where findings conflict and what remains unclear, and ends by showing precisely where your question fits. A list of summarised sources that never talk to each other is not a literature review at masters level.

At the design stage, rigour means justification. Naming your method is not enough; you need to show why it suits your question better than the alternatives you rejected. Use such frameworks to structure your reasoning, not to replace it.

At the ethics stage, rigour means treating consent and protection as design questions, not paperwork. Participants need to understand what they are agreeing to, anonymity and confidentiality need to be genuinely deliverable, data needs to be stored and handled in line with your obligations under data protection law, and your organisation needs to have given real permission for the study. All of this is settled before collection begins, through whatever approval process your centre requires.

At the analysis stage, rigour means answering the question rather than describing the data. For qualitative material, an approach such as thematic analysis gives you a disciplined way to move from transcripts to themes to findings. For quantitative material, the analysis should match what your data can actually bear. Either way, the test is the same: does each finding move you closer to an answer.

At the conclusions and recommendations stage, rigour means traceability. Every conclusion should be traceable to findings, every recommendation to conclusions, and the limits of your study should be stated honestly. Reflection then completes the project: a candid account of what worked, what you would do differently, and what the process taught you as a practitioner.

Planning the project alongside work

7CO04 is almost always completed alongside a full-time role, and the projects that finish well are planned backwards from the deadline. Some stages compress under pressure and some do not. Writing can be squeezed; fieldwork cannot, because interviews depend on other people's diaries, surveys need time to be answered and chased, and ethics approval has its own clock that you do not control.

A realistic plan front-loads the slow decisions and protects the fieldwork window. Settle the question and secure permission early, get the ethics process moving as soon as your centre allows, and assume data collection will take longer than you expect, because in practice it nearly always does. Leave genuine time at the end for analysis and writing, since analysis done in a rush tends to describe data instead of interrogating it. Your centre will set the milestones that matter, so build your plan around your own current brief and programme dates rather than a generic timeline.

How to approach 7CO04, step by step

  1. Read your current assessment brief and centre guidance in full, and note every requirement, milestone and approval step; formats, word counts and ethics processes vary by centre.
  2. Choose a topic that matters to an organisation you can access and that genuinely interests you, because you will live with it for months.
  3. Narrow the topic to a specific, answerable, bounded research question with clear aims, and test it against the access you realistically have.
  4. Review the literature around your question, looking for conflicting findings and gaps your study can address.
  5. Choose and justify your research design and methods, showing why they fit the question better than the alternatives.
  6. Secure organisational permission and complete your centre's ethics process before collecting anything, with consent, anonymity, confidentiality and data handling all resolved.
  7. Collect your data with margin built in for non-response, cancelled interviews and delay.
  8. Analyse the data against the question, using a systematic approach and keeping an audit trail from raw data to findings.
  9. Write conclusions that answer the question, recommendations that follow from the conclusions, and a reflection that is honest about limitations.
  10. Review the whole report for the thread of logic: a reader should be able to trace any recommendation back through conclusions and findings to the data.

Integrity note: the research in 7CO04 must be genuinely conducted by you. A modest study done honestly will always beat an impressive one that cannot be trusted.

A worked example: Amara scopes her project

Here is a fictional scenario showing what good scoping looks like. Amara is an invented Level 7 learner working in the people team of a professional services firm that moved to hybrid working. She is worried that early-career staff are missing the informal learning that used to happen in the office, and her first attempt at a topic is simply the impact of hybrid working. As a research project, that is unmanageable: impact on what, for whom, measured how.

So she narrows in stages. From the topic, hybrid working, she chooses an angle: its effect on professional development. From the angle, she defines a population and context: employees in their first three years at her own firm. Each step down the ladder makes the project smaller and sharper, until she reaches a question: how do early-career employees at the firm experience the effect of hybrid working on their professional development. The aims that sit under it cover identifying which development experiences have changed, understanding how early-career staff interpret those changes, and generating recommendations for the firm's approach to early-career development.

The question then dictates sensible choices downstream. It is an experience question, so a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews fits, with thematic analysis to move from transcripts to findings. The access test passes: the participants are colleagues she can reach, the time demand on each is modest, and the people team can grant permission. The ethics work is real rather than routine, because she holds a role that could influence participants, so consent must be genuinely voluntary, anonymity must be protected in a firm where colleagues might recognise each other's stories, and nothing identifiable can reach line managers. None of this is exotic. It is simply a project scoped so that every later stage has something solid to stand on.

Why 7CO04 projects go wrong

The failure patterns on this unit are remarkably consistent, and most trace back to sequencing.

The most common is a question that stays too broad. A project on the impact of wellbeing initiatives, or what employees think about hybrid working, cannot be answered within the word count or the access available, so the report ends up general, descriptive and unanswerable. Narrowing feels like losing ambition; in research it is how ambition becomes achievable.

The second is choosing methods before the question. Learners decide they will run a survey, or that they want to do interviews, and then reverse-engineer a question to fit. The justification section then struggles, because the honest answer to why this method is that it was chosen first. Questions come first; methods are chosen to serve them.

The third is collecting data before ethics and permission are settled. It usually happens under deadline pressure and it is the most dangerous fault on the list, because data gathered without proper consent and approval may be unusable, and pressing ahead anyway turns a planning problem into an integrity problem.

The fourth is analysis that describes instead of answers. The report presents charts of responses or long quotations from interviews, accurately, and never converts them into findings that address the question. Description shows you collected data; analysis shows you can think with it.

The fifth is recommendations detached from findings. The recommendations chapter suddenly proposes initiatives the data never examined, often the things the learner believed before starting. At masters level, a recommendation you cannot trace to your findings is an opinion wearing a research report as a disguise.

How much bigger is 7CO04 than other units?

Treat it as a different order of commitment: typically the largest submission in the diploma, spread over many months, with stages that depend on other people's availability. Check your own brief for the exact requirements, and plan backwards from the deadline rather than forwards from today.

Do I need to be good at statistics?

Only if your question needs them. Many strong projects are qualitative, using interviews or focus groups analysed thematically, and mixed-methods designs can keep any numerical element simple. Choose the design your question requires and your skills can support, then justify it.

Can I do my research in my own organisation?

Usually yes, and most learners do, because access is the hardest practical problem and your own organisation is where you have it. You still need genuine permission and careful ethics, especially around your own position and influence, so check your centre's requirements early.
