What is 3CO02 about?

The unit is practical rather than theoretical. You are asked to explain ideas clearly, work with simple figures, and show how a piece of data could lead to a sensible action in a workplace. Worked examples, real or clearly invented, are the natural way to demonstrate this.

Do I need to be good at maths?

No, and this is the single most common worry about the unit. The numbers involved are everyday ones: counts, percentages and averages, all of which a calculator or spreadsheet will do for you. There are no formulas to memorise and no statistics in the technical sense.

The marks sit in what you say about the numbers, not in producing them. If you can look at a small table, notice that one figure stands out, and suggest what the organisation might do about it, you have the entire mathematical toolkit the unit requires.

What is evidence-based practice in simple terms?

It means making decisions based on evidence rather than guesswork, habit or whoever argues loudest. Instead of assuming people leave because of pay, an evidence-based people team would check what leavers say on the way out, what the turnover figures show, and what managers and employees think, then decide.

Evidence is broader than numbers. It includes the organisation's own data, the professional experience of practitioners, the views of employees and stakeholders, and published research and good-practice guidance described in general terms. Good decisions draw on several of these at once.

What kinds of data do people teams use?

The common types are absence data, showing how often people are off and for how long; turnover data, showing how many leave over a period; recruitment data, such as applicant numbers and time to hire; survey results, showing how people feel about their work; and performance information from appraisals and reviews.

Most of it already exists as a by-product of employing people, sitting in HR and payroll systems, application systems and survey tools. Part of what 3CO02 teaches is simply noticing how much useful information organisations already hold, because even basic absence and turnover figures can say a surprising amount about how a workforce is doing.

Do I need real data from a workplace?

Usually not. Many briefs supply the figures they want you to work with, and where they do not, a small, believable, clearly fictional dataset for an invented organisation is a well-established approach. What earns marks is how you use the numbers, not where they came from.

If you do use figures from a real employer, keep them anonymous and avoid anything sensitive or identifiable. And as always, check your own brief and centre guidance first, because some centres set specific expectations about data sources.

How do I present data in an assignment?

Choose the simplest display that fits the point. A table suits a few exact figures, a bar chart compares groups, a line chart shows change over time, and a pie chart shows shares of a whole when there are only a few slices. Label everything: a clear title, named axes or columns, and units.

Then add words. A chart or table should never stand alone; follow it with at least a sentence saying what it shows and why it matters. Markers credit the point you make with the data, not the picture itself.

What does interpreting data actually mean?

Interpreting means answering two plain questions: what does this number suggest, and what should the organisation do about it? Restating a figure in a sentence is description; saying that unusually high absence in one team suggests a problem worth investigating, and recommending a next step, is interpretation.

Good interpretation at Level 3 is also cautious. Data suggests rather than proves, so offering more than one possible explanation and recommending a closer look before acting shows stronger understanding than jumping confidently to a single cause.

How does data ethics come into it?

The unit expects a practical, everyday grasp of handling data responsibly. Keep personal information safe, share it only with people who genuinely need it, and use it only for proper work purposes. When presenting figures, protect privacy by reporting at team level rather than naming individuals, and anonymise any real examples you use.

Honesty matters too. Presenting figures fairly, rather than cherry-picking the ones that flatter your argument, is part of handling data responsibly and is worth a sentence or two in any data answer.

Why do people get referred on 3CO02?

The most common cause is numbers left uninterpreted: answers that present a table or chart accurately but never say what it suggests or what the organisation should do. Other regular causes are answers that never connect data to a decision, missing criteria in the brief, overcomplicated technical language, and unlabelled or cluttered charts.

Almost none of these are maths failures, which is worth repeating for anxious learners. They are gaps, and gaps close easily: check that every figure has an interpretation beside it, every data task ends with a recommendation, and every criterion in your brief has a visible answer.

How do I manage the word count?

Plan it before you draft. List every task and criterion in your brief, share your total allowance across them in proportion to how much each asks for, and write the target next to each task. Numbers help here: a clearly labelled table or chart can carry information that would take a paragraph to write out, leaving more words for interpretation.

When you need to cut, trim background and repetition first, since definitions need stating once and scene-setting earns little. The exact allowance and any tolerance rules come from your centre, so take the figures from your own current brief.
